How old is 3 in dog years?
A 3-year-old dog is about 29 in human years if it is medium-sized: a young adult. Toy breeds are 28, giant breeds 31, and the epigenetic clock says 49. Size matters because big dogs age faster.
Size-adjusted chart (AVMA/AKC style): year 1 = 15, year 2 = 24, then +4 per year for toy and small dogs, +5 medium, +6 large, +7 giant. Epigenetic clock (Wang 2020): 16 × ln(3) + 31 = 49.

What a 3-year-old dog needs
Young adult
The healthiest years. Baseline bloodwork now gives your vet numbers to compare against later. Keep body condition at 4 to 5 out of 9: this is when extra weight quietly starts costing years, since overweight dogs lived 5 months to 2.5 years less across 12 breeds (Salt 2019). If you plan to insure, do it now, before anything is on the record.
3 years old in popular breeds
The same age lands differently by breed, because the senior threshold is the last quarter of each breed's expected lifespan.

Frequently asked questions
How old is a 3-year-old dog in human years?
About 29 for a medium-sized dog on the size-adjusted chart. Toy and small breeds are 28, large breeds 30 and giant breeds 31. The epigenetic clock, which was calibrated on Labradors, gives 49.
Is a 3-year-old dog a senior?
No. At 3, dogs of every size are still young adults. Senior starts in the last quarter of expected lifespan: about 6.5 for giant breeds, 8 for large, 9 for medium and 10.5 for toy and small breeds.
How many dog years is 3 human years?
Read the other way, a human aged 3 matches a medium-sized dog of about 2 months (about 2 months for a small dog, about 2 months for a large one). The first dog year is worth about 15 human years, the second about 9, and each year after that 4 to 7 depending on size.
Is 3 old for a dog?
No. The median dog lives 12.5 years (UK, 2024), so a 3-year-old has most of its life ahead. Giant breeds are the exception: with 7 to 10-year lifespans they reach middle age by about 4.
Why does the epigenetic clock give a different number?
The 2020 clock (Wang et al.) maps DNA methylation in dogs to humans and finds that dogs age very fast early and slowly later: 16 × ln(3) + 31 = 49. The size-adjusted chart instead adds a fixed number of human years per dog year. They agree that a dog is adult by two and diverge in the middle years. Neither is a medical measurement.
