Dog lifespan calculator

How long will your dog live? Start from the breed's typical range, then see how sex, neutering and body condition shift it, with the study behind each number.

Mixed breed? Leave empty and choose the closest size class.
Ideal: ribs easy to feel, visible waist from above. Overweight: ribs hard to feel. Obese: no waist, fat deposits. Check body condition.
Estimated lifespan
10–14years
Base range for a medium dog: 10–14 years, then adjusted by the factors below.
    • All dogs, UK 2024 median12.5 years

Population effects from published cohorts, applied to the breed's typical range. They show direction and rough size, not a prediction for one dog. Genetics, luck and veterinary care matter as much.

    What moves the number

    • Breed and size. The base range is the breed's typical life expectancy from AKC breed data. Across 584,734 UK dogs, small breeds had a median of 12.7 years, large breeds 11.9, and flat-faced breeds 11.2 against 12.8 for medium-muzzled dogs.
    • Body condition, +0.5 to −2.5 years. Overweight dogs lived 5 months to 2.5 years less than ideal-weight dogs across 12 breeds (Salt 2019). In the lifetime Labrador study, lean-fed dogs lived 1.8 years longer (Kealy 2002). This is the biggest lever you control.
    • Neutering, about +1 year. UK life tables show neutered dogs living roughly a year longer than entire dogs of the same sex (Teng 2022); a US database study found a 1.5 year gap (Hoffman 2013).
    • Sex, about +0.3 years for females. Female dogs lived 11.41 years versus 11.07 for males in the UK life tables.
    What the calculator cannot see

Genetics within a breed line, early-life nutrition, dental disease, whether a cancer is caught early, and plain luck. The estimate tells you which direction your choices push, not the date.

    Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a dog lifespan calculator?

It is a population estimate, not a prediction. The breed range comes from AKC breed data; the adjustments are average effects measured in large studies (for example, overweight dogs lived up to 2.5 years less in a 12-breed study of over 50,000 dogs). Your individual dog can land anywhere in or outside the range.

What has the biggest effect on how long a dog lives?

Breed and size first: giant breeds live 7 to 10 years, small breeds 12 to 16. After that, body condition is the largest factor an owner controls. Lean-fed Labradors lived 1.8 years (15%) longer than free-fed littermates in a 14-year Purina study.

    Do neutered dogs live longer?

On average, yes. In UK VetCompass data, neutered females lived 11.98 years versus 10.50 for entire females, and neutered males 11.49 versus 10.58. Part of the gap is that neutered dogs avoid reproductive cancers and infections, and part reflects owner care. For some large breeds, neutering very early can raise joint and certain cancer risks, so timing is a conversation with your vet.

Do mixed-breed dogs live longer than purebreds?

Not in the largest recent dataset. The 2024 UK study found a median of 12.7 years for purebreds and 12.0 for crossbreeds, partly because popular crosses include flat-faced parents. Older US data found crossbreeds lived about a year longer. The honest answer is that it depends which breeds are in the mix.
