How long do small dogs live?
Small dogs live the longest of any size group: a 12.7-year median in the largest study of dog lifespan, with toy breeds typically reaching 12 to 16 years and small breeds 12 to 15. Here is why, which small breeds live longest, and the flat-faced exceptions.
Why small dogs live longer
Across mammals, bigger species live longer: elephants outlive mice. Inside the dog species it runs the other way, and the gap is large. A Chihuahua reaches adult size at 5 lb in under a year; a Great Dane reaches 140 lb in two. That growth rate is the best current explanation: fast-growing large dogs show earlier cancer (bone cancer above all), earlier heart disease and earlier joint failure. Small dogs also age more slowly after maturity, about 4 human years per dog year against 7 for giants, which is why a 12-year-old toy breed is often still active.
The effect is visible in every large dataset. In the 2024 UK study, small breeds had a median of 12.7 years, medium 12.5 and large 11.9, and the longest-lived breeds (Lancashire Heeler 15.4, Tibetan Spaniel 15.2, Shiba Inu 14.6, Papillon 14.5) were all small or medium-small.

Measured: small breeds in UK life tables (VetCompass 2022)
| Russell Terrier | 12.72 yr at birth |
| Yorkshire Terrier | 12.54 yr at birth |
| Shih Tzuflat-faced | 11.05 yr at birth |
| Cavalier King Charles Spanielflat-faced | 10.64 yr at birth |

| Pugflat-faced | 7.65 yr at birth |
| French Bulldogflat-faced | 4.53 yr at birth |
Life expectancy at birth includes early deaths, which is why the flat-faced breeds sit far below the other small dogs.
The exceptions: flat-faced small breeds
Being small does not protect a dog with a flat face. Flat-faced breeds had a median of 11.2 years against 12.8 for medium-muzzled dogs, and in life tables the French Bulldog, English Bulldog and Pug sat at the bottom of the common breeds. Airway obstruction, heat stroke and spinal malformations are the reasons. If you own one, keep weight down, avoid heat, and ask your vet for a BOAS assessment.
What shortens a small dog's life
- Dental disease. Nearly universal in small mouths by middle age and linked with heart, kidney and liver changes. Daily brushing and professional cleanings.
- Mitral valve disease. The common heart disease of small seniors. An annual listen to the heart from age 6 catches murmurs early; early medication extends life.
- Obesity. A few extra ounces of treats is a large share of a 10 lb dog's diet. Overweight dogs lived up to 2.5 years less across 12 breeds.
- Tracheal collapse and slipping kneecaps. Walk on a harness, keep nails short, ask for patella checks.
Frequently asked questions
How long do small dogs live?
Small breeds had a median lifespan of 12.7 years in the 2024 UK study of 584,734 dogs, the longest of any size group, and typical breed ranges run 12 to 16 years for toy breeds and 12 to 15 for small breeds. Many individuals reach 16 or 17; dogs past 20 are extremely rare in any size.
Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs?
Inside the dog species, size predicts lifespan backwards: bigger individuals die younger. Large dogs grow much faster, and that accelerated growth is linked with earlier cancer, heart disease and joint failure. Small dogs reach adult size in under a year at a fraction of the growth rate, and they age more slowly afterwards: about 4 human years per dog year versus 7 for giants.
What is the longest-living small dog breed?
By breed-standard range the Coton de Tulear (15–19 years) leads the small breeds, with the Manchester Terrier (Standard) and Manchester Terrier (Toy) close behind. In measured UK data the Lancashire Heeler (15.4 years median) and Tibetan Spaniel (15.2) top the whole list.
Do all small dogs live long?
No. Flat-faced small breeds such as the Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian are the exception: flat-faced breeds had a median of 11.2 years against 12.8 for medium-muzzled dogs, and the French Bulldog had the lowest life expectancy at birth of any common breed in UK life tables. Dental disease, mitral valve disease and tracheal collapse are the other small-dog killers.
When is a small dog a senior?
From about 10 to 11 years, using the AAHA definition of senior as the last quarter of expected lifespan. A small dog is middle-aged at 7, when many large dogs are already seniors.
