How old is 15 in dog years?

A 15-year-old dog is about 89 in human years if it is medium-sized: a senior. Toy breeds are 76, giant breeds 115, and the epigenetic clock says 74. Size matters because big dogs age faster.

What a 15-year-old dog needs

Fifteen is a long life for any dog. Only a handful of breeds have measured medians above 14, all of them small.

Senior

Senior means the last quarter of expected lifespan (AAHA 2019). Switch to exams every six months with bloodwork, urine and blood pressure: kidney, thyroid and heart disease are treatable when caught early. Pain is under-diagnosed, especially arthritis, and a trial of pain relief that visibly brightens a dog is itself a diagnosis. Keep them moving, keep them lean, and if health slips, score quality of life weekly.

15 years old in popular breeds

The same age lands differently by breed, because the senior threshold is the last quarter of each breed's expected lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How old is a 15-year-old dog in human years?

About 89 for a medium-sized dog on the size-adjusted chart. Toy and small breeds are 76, large breeds 102 and giant breeds 115. The epigenetic clock, which was calibrated on Labradors, gives 74.

Is a 15-year-old dog a senior?

Yes, for every size. Senior begins in the last quarter of expected lifespan: about 6.5 for giants, 8 for large breeds, 9 for medium and 10.5 for small dogs. At 15, all of them are past that line.

How many dog years is 15 human years?

Read the other way, a human aged 15 matches a medium-sized dog of about 1 years (about 1 years for a small dog, about 1 years for a large one). The first dog year is worth about 15 human years, the second about 9, and each year after that 4 to 7 depending on size.

Is 15 old for a dog?

Yes. 15 is past the all-dog median of 12.5 years. Toy and small breeds, whose ranges run to 15 or 16, reach it most often; for large and giant breeds it is exceptional.

Why does the epigenetic clock give a different number?

The 2020 clock (Wang et al.) maps DNA methylation in dogs to humans and finds that dogs age very fast early and slowly later: 16 × ln(15) + 31 = 74. The size-adjusted chart instead adds a fixed number of human years per dog year. They agree that a dog is adult by two and diverge in the middle years. Neither is a medical measurement.
