Whippets typically live 12 to 15 years. Here is what tends to cut that short, when a Whippet becomes a senior, and what measurably adds years.

Medium breeds sit right at the all-dog median of 12.5 years in the 2024 UK study. Within the breed, the spread is wide: body condition alone moves lifespan by up to 2.5 years.

What shortens a Whippet's life

Conditions with an established association with the breed, from breed club health surveys, OFA statistics and the veterinary literature. Not every Whippet gets them; these are the ones to screen for and to insure against.

How to help your Whippet live longer

Keep them lean, all their life

Overweight dogs lived 5 months to 2.5 years less than ideal-weight dogs in a study of 50,000 dogs; lean-fed Labradors lived 1.8 years longer than free-fed littermates. Ribs should be easy to feel and a waist visible from above.

Brush teeth and treat dental disease

Periodontal disease is nearly universal by middle age and is linked with heart, kidney and liver changes. Daily brushing plus professional cleanings when tartar builds.

Listen to the heart every year

Whippets carry breed-specific heart risks. An annual auscultation from age 1 catches murmurs early; your vet may recommend an echocardiogram or Holter monitor. Early medication measurably extends life in several heart conditions.

Run a DNA health screen

Tests exist for von willebrand disease. A result does not change the dog, but it tells your vet what to watch for and which drugs to avoid.

Talk about neuter timing

Neutered dogs lived about a year longer than entire dogs in UK life tables (11.98 vs 10.50 years for females; 11.49 vs 10.58 for males). For most small and medium breeds, timing after 6 months is a reasonable default; ask your vet.

Twice-yearly vet visits from age 10

Whippets enter the senior stage at about 10, the last quarter of their expected lifespan. From then, exams every six months with bloodwork, urine testing and blood pressure catch kidney, thyroid and heart disease while they are treatable.

What do whippets usually die from?

The conditions most often behind a Whippet's death or serious illness are mitral valve disease, eye disease, anesthesia sensitivity. Across all dogs, cancer is the leading cause of death in older animals, followed by heart, kidney and neurological disease.

When is a Whippet a senior?

From about 10 years, using the AAHA definition of senior as the last 25% of expected lifespan. Mature adulthood starts at about 4.5.

How old is a 5-year-old Whippet in human years?

About 39 on the size-adjusted chart, and 57 by the epigenetic clock. A 10-year-old Whippet is about 64.
