Get an Embrace quoteTibetan Spaniels typically live 12 to 15 years, and UK veterinary records put the figure at 15.2 years. Here is what tends to cut that short, when a Tibetan Spaniel becomes a senior, and what measurably adds years.
Small breeds are the long-lived end of the dog world: a 12.7-year median in the 2024 UK study against 11.9 for large breeds. Tibetan Spaniels have a shortened muzzle, and flat-faced breeds as a group lived about 1.5 years less than medium-muzzled dogs in the same study. Within the breed, the spread is wide: body condition alone moves lifespan by up to 2.5 years.
Conditions with an established association with the breed, from breed club health surveys, OFA statistics and the veterinary literature. Not every Tibetan Spaniel gets them; these are the ones to screen for and to insure against.
Overweight dogs lived 5 months to 2.5 years less than ideal-weight dogs in a study of 50,000 dogs; lean-fed Labradors lived 1.8 years longer than free-fed littermates. Ribs should be easy to feel and a waist visible from above.
Periodontal disease is nearly universal by middle age and is linked with heart, kidney and liver changes. In tibetan spaniels it is the number one health problem: daily brushing and cleanings under anesthesia when your vet advises.
Tibetan Spaniels are flat-faced. Avoid heat and hard exercise, use a harness, keep weight down (every extra pound worsens breathing) and ask your vet for a BOAS assessment; airway surgery helps many dogs. Flat-faced breeds had a median lifespan of 11.2 years versus 12.8 for medium-muzzled breeds in the 2024 UK study.
Toy and small breeds are prone to tracheal collapse and slipping kneecaps. Walk on a harness, keep nails short, and ask your vet to check the patellas at every visit.
Tests exist for progressive retinal atrophy. A result does not change the dog, but it tells your vet what to watch for and which drugs to avoid.
Neutered dogs lived about a year longer than entire dogs in UK life tables (11.98 vs 10.50 years for females; 11.49 vs 10.58 for males). For most small and medium breeds, timing after 6 months is a reasonable default; ask your vet.
Tibetan Spaniels enter the senior stage at about 10, the last quarter of their expected lifespan. From then, exams every six months with bloodwork, urine testing and blood pressure catch kidney, thyroid and heart disease while they are treatable.
Stages follow the 2019 AAHA guidelines, scaled to the breed's expected lifespan of about 13.5 years.
Prefilled with a typical adult weight of 12 lb. Adjust to your dog's ideal weight.
Starting point from NRC and WSAVA energy equations. Individual dogs vary by ±20% or more. Weigh your dog every 2 to 4 weeks and adjust by 10% until the weight is stable.
Treatment for progressive retinal atrophy can run into thousands. Insurers exclude conditions that show up before you enroll, so the cheapest time to insure a Tibetan Spaniel is while they are young and healthy. Compare at least two quotes; premiums vary by breed, age and location.

Tibetan Spaniels have known genetic variants (progressive retinal atrophy). A one-time test tells you and your vet what to watch and, for MDR1-type variants, which drugs to avoid.

From about age 10, the checklist changes: twice-yearly exams, bloodwork, pain control for arthritis and a senior diet. Start with the senior dog checklist and the senior care guides.
Tibetan Spaniels typically live 12 to 15 years according to AKC breed data. In UK veterinary records the figure is 15.2 years (uk median, 2024).
The conditions most often behind a Tibetan Spaniel's death or serious illness are progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, cherry eye. Across all dogs, cancer is the leading cause of death in older animals, followed by heart, kidney and neurological disease.
From about 10 years, using the AAHA definition of senior as the last 25% of expected lifespan. Mature adulthood starts at about 4.5.
About 36 on the size-adjusted chart, and 57 by the epigenetic clock. A 10-year-old Tibetan Spaniel is about 56.
Keep body condition at 4 to 5 out of 9, brush teeth, avoid heat and get the airway assessed, see the vet twice a year from age 10, and check every new lump. Each of these has measured effects on lifespan in published studies.
